I took a quilting class a few years ago and learn t one way to baste a quilt.
I have since discovered some other ways and decided to try them all.
It is a good idea to make a small quilt first. Avoid stripes and plaids as the backing for your first quilt. It can be a mission to line up the pattern with the lines of the quilt top.
The batting and back should be about two inches bigger tan the top.
This is the method I was taught.
Smaller pins are better to use because it leaves less for the fabric layers to shift.
Store the pins open so they are ready for when you next need them.
Iron out the creases and fold lines of the top and back.
Lay out the back right side down onto the table.
Place the batting on top, smoothing out the creases.
Place the quilt top with right side up on top of the batting.
It is easier if the pieces are bigger than the table.
Clamp or tape down the fabric- Attach one piece of tape, clip or clamp, then do the same on the opposite side, pulling the fabric slightly until it is taught.Continue in this way on all sides.
It is important to keep the top as square as possible.
Starting in the middle of the quilt, pin the quilt making sure you pick up all three layers.
Pin with pins facing in the same direction about three inches apart.
When you have pinned the whole quilt, remove the clamps.
It is better to quilt as soon as possible. If not try and lay it flat until you are ready to quilt.
