Replacing a worn collar of a men’s shirt

Replace a worn collar on a Men’s Shirt,

We used to get quite embarrassed when my mother used to replaced my dad’s shirt collars. Well now I have students and a husband who also likes to hold on to their favourite shirts just a little longer. I guess it does make sense since the rest of the shirt is perfectly fine but the collar is worn.

Carefully remove the top part of the collar using a seam ripper. Do not remove the whole collar because you need to keep the button on the same side. At this stage you can convert the shirt to a mandarin collar by simply top stitching. To prevent the collar from tearing further, is a good idea to iron some bias tape over the worn part or carefully hand stitch the tear.

Fold in half and mark the centre. Do this on the collar and the shirt.

Turn the collar so that the worn side is on the outside and the good side is is on the inside. Pin the collar to the inside of the collar part on the shirt making sure you match the centre.

I usually baste it by hand to hold it in place before I stitch it.
Stitch it as far as you can using the foldline and original stitch line as a guide.

Fold in the seam of the bottom part of the collar. Sandwich the top part of the collar between the bottom collar.

Top stitch to complete.
If the cuffs are worn you can convert it to a short sleeve shirt.
