How to use sewing machine attachments. Blind Hem foot.

I usually do hems by hand while watching T.V. But one of my students wanted to learn how to do this type of hem by machine. So here it is.
You will need to practice on scraps of fabric first.Because some of the stitches will be visible on the outside, it is important to use thread that matches your fabric as close as possible or use invisible thread.

Most machines have stitch that looks like one of these.Set your machine to the correct stitch.
Check your sewing machine manual for the “blind hem” foot and attach it to your machine.
I have however done blind hems using a universal presser foot.it is better to use the correct foot though.

If your hem is not serged, simply do a double fold at the raw edge.

Turn up the hem and press and pin.
With the wrong side of the garment facing you, fold again, almost like making a pleat.Leave about 1/4 inch or more a the edge.

The front should look like this.
The inside should look like this.

Sew with the edge of the hem on the right.Make sure you allow only the top edge of the zig zag  stitch to “catch” the folded part.

It should look like this when complete.

When you use a thread that matches well,yo don’t notice the stitches on the outside.
