Tutorial, Fabric Painted Tote Bag

Here is an example of how I used an design from my coloring book to paint on a canvas bag.

You can find the coloring book at my store gunksdesigns.etsy.com or gunksdesigns.artfire.com

Enlarge or reduce the design.

Mark the centre of the bag and the centre of the bag.

Line them up.

Transfer the design onto the canvas bag Using a light box or one of the alternative methods mentioned below.

Substitute for light box :-

Most of us have a problem of too little space for large equipment. Also some of may not find a need to invest in a light box for only a few uses.

There are some ways to improvise.

1. Tape the image on a window or glass door. Tape the fabric over the image and trace using a pencil. I taped the photocopied page inside the bag and taped the bag to the glass door and transferred the design with a pencil. OR

2. You can place a desk lamp under a glass top table and tape the design and fabric on the glass and trace with a pencil. The light from the lamp will allow you to see the image clearly. OR

3. Use a clear plastic tub turned over instead of a glass top table. I suggest you use a LED light under the tub instead of a desk lamp. The light of the desk lamp may get too hot for the plastic tub.

Once you have traced the design,Place a piece of cardboard or newspaper in the bag to prevent the paint from bleeding to the other side of your bag.

Use the fabric paint and paint style of your choice to color in the design.
